The up to date implementation of flood protection actions in the cross-border area of ​​Greece and Bulgaria and the planning of the subsequent interventions were at the center of the 5th Flood Protection project meeting, held in Kardzhali, Bulgaria on Tuesday 2 December 2019.

The project “Cross Border Planning and Infrastructure Measures for Flood Protection” implemented as part of the Interreg Greece – Bulgaria 2014 – 2020 cross-border program and co-funded by the European Union, aims to increase the level of flood protection in the cross-border area between Greece and Bulgaria, especially in areas with high probability of flooding along Strymona and Evros rivers.

During the meeting, representatives of each project partner presented their current actions within the project, as well as their planning for the next 3 – 6 months. In particular, representatives of the Region of Central Macedonia – which is the project’s lead partner – provided detailed descriptions and audiovisual material of the project’s interventions in the Lake Kerkini area, such as the supply of 1300 meters of flood protection portable equipment for Mavrothalassa and Neochori villages, the purchase of two large-scale wheeled pumps and two hundred small-scale portable pumps, the reinforcement of the protective embankment at Lake Kerkini and the construction of gabions with a total length of 1150 meters. In parallel, planning for future interventions in the Kerkini Lake area and the Strymona River Basin, as part of the project, has been presented.

The total expenditure on flood interventions in the Lake Kerkini area amounts to € 4 million, of which € 1.6 million is funded through the “Flood Protection” project and the remaining € 2.4 million through the national public investment program.
